Margot Samel is pleased to announce a solo presentation of works by Gina Proenza (b.1994 in Bogotá, Colombia) at Basel Social Club.
At Basel Social Club, Gina Proenza presents three wall-based works referencing the abacus, a Babylonian-era calculating device with sliding pearls. In these works, the horizontal rows are filled to the frame, blocking movement and rendering the abacus’s function obsolete. Using pearls of varying colors, Proenza “writes” words within the frames—terms that often carry layered or ambiguous meanings. These minimalist works reflect the ambivalence of language: words that define yet evade, that articulate yet obscure.
